We are aware that not all members wish to take a test.  Taking the advanced test after training is not compulsory. We are happy to provide training, as our aim is to improve safety for all road users. If you just wish to brush up on a few skills, then we are happy to help.  There are several options for training – a taster session, short course or full associates’ course – see course details on this website.

A website aimed at helping older people adapt to changes in their driving to stay safe on the road, has been launched by the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA).

www.olderdrivers.org.uk has been set up by the safety charity, with funding from the Department for Transport, to provide advice and information for older drivers in a bid to help them to drive safely for longer.

The website gives tips on how people can update their driving skills and knowledge to maintain their freedom and independence on the road, as well as advice for families or friends who are concerned about a loved one’s driving.

Membership with our group is then covered up to the next annual subscription due date (April the following year) However, if you joined in January/February or March of the current year then your renewal will not be due until the next year.

Membership to RoSPA HQ is automatic for twelve months when you apply for your test (test fees are payable direct to them and not included in our full associates’ course fee). They will send you a reminder when your annual subscription to them is payable.

It is up to you if you choose to maintain membership/subscriptions to either group. If you maintain membership with RoSPA HQ then your three-yearly retest fee is free. They will send a reminder when you are due to take your retest. To receive refresher training for your retest from RoSPA Cornwall, you must be a group member of RoSPA Cornwall. We hope you will maintain your group membership with the local group after your training to help support us continue training for future members.

We are willing to work with anybody who is over the age of 18 and holds a full driving licence. Your car or bike needs to be well maintained and capable of sustaining 70 mph on a motorway or dual carriageway. We hope that by the end of your training you will be capable of passing the RoSPA Advanced Driving or Riding test but that is not a requirement of us working with you.

We are only insured to provide training for anyone over the age of 18.  We actively encourage young drivers to do advanced driving and enhance their driving skills with a view to become a safer driver.  Advanced driver training can improve awareness and anticipation and the use of the system of car control helps reduce the risk of accidents.  If the potential associate is not yet 18 please consider purchasing an advanced driving course for his 18th birthday!

We offer FREE taster sessions or alternatively you may wish to do the short course.

We do not have vehicles for hire. One to one practical instruction with you driving/riding your own vehicle. For Driver Training your tutor sits alongside you in your vehicle. For Rider Training your tutor will follow you on their own bike and stop from time to time to provide feedback and instruction.

We welcome anyone who shares our vision and mission. To become a tutor you must have passed your advanced test at Silver or above and have been a member of the group for at least one year. The Training Officer will assess your suitability as a tutor and a recommendation can be put forward for the Committee to consider.

You will be allocated one of our local, volunteer RoSPA tutors.

Our team of tutors have all passed the advanced test at a high grade and have been trained and assessed in order to meet the requirements to provide training for you. They take retests every three years so you can be assured that you will receive one-to-one tutoring to a high standard.

A mid-course check is usually carried out with a different tutor and they or another different tutor will carry out a pre-test check also.

They are all like-minded driving or riding enthusiasts with increased safety for all road users being at the fore front of their reasoning behind volunteering.

Any individual can pay for the cost of a course for themselves or for someone else, but the person making the payment should not be your employer or business. Businesses wishing to enhance the driving/riding skills of their employees should approach RoSPA HQ direct regarding ‘Fleet Training’. Unfortunately local groups are not able to offer training to groups of employees.

Make your tutor aware of this as soon as possible.  He/She may decide it is better to pause your training for a while, especially if there are other associates waiting to get started.

Riding seems to be a more social past time than driving and riders tend to specifically go out for a ‘ride’ more than drivers do for a ‘drive’.   We are hoping to approve use of space at Perranporth airfield and are planning some practical driving events in the near future.

All of our tutors are volunteers and do not get paid.  A nominal fee of £5 towards the costs of fuel is appreciated for each session, and a cup of coffee is always welcome!
