Driver and Rider Course

A combined course for people who want to take both courses

What is the Combined Driver & Rider Course?

On our courses you will receive one to one practical instruction with you driving/riding your own vehicle. For Driver Training your tutor sits alongside you in your vehicle. For Rider Training your tutor will follow you on their own bike and stop from time to time to provide feedback and instruction.

Training given is based on the same content given to train Police Drivers and Riders. We use a training manual called ‘Roadcraft’ or ‘Motorcycle Roadcraft’. It is a valuable learning aid to help you reach a higher level.

The aim is to improve your driving/riding ability and safety awareness which * will then help protect you and other road users. Raising your awareness of your current situation to improve your ability to control the position and speed of your vehicle relative to the situation is key. The Roadcraft system of car/bike control is a methodical approach to hazards which increases your safety by giving you more time to react in complex situations.

You should become a better driver/rider by increasing your awareness of all the factors affecting your own capabilities, the characteristics of your vehicle, and the road and traffic conditions.

What are the benefits or this course?

The chance to achieve the highest standard of driving or riding available to civilians.

The possibility of cheaper insurance if you pass the test, and savings on running costs.

Meeting like-minded people who are interested in being better, safer drivers and riders.

Who provides the training?

You will be allocated one of our local, volunteer RoSPA tutors.

Our team of tutors have all passed the advanced test at a high grade and have been trained and assessed in order to meet the requirements to provide training for you. They take retests every three years so you can be assured that you will receive one-to-one tutoring to a high standard.

A mid-course check is usually carried out with a different tutor and they, or another tutor will carry out a pre-test check also.

They are all like-minded driving or riding enthusiasts with increased safety for all road users being at the fore front of their reasoning behind volunteering.

Who can apply for the course?

We are willing to work with anybody who is over the age of 18 and holds a full driving licence.

You will be driving/riding your own vehicle; we do not provide cars or bikes for training.

Your car or bike needs to be well maintained and capable of sustaining 70 m.p.h on a motorway or dual carriageway.
